Italian Heritage Month – June 2021

June is Italian Heritage Month in Canada when the community honours and celebrates the exceptional contributions of Canadians of Italian origin in shaping cities in the provinces across Canada.

Canada is home to more than 1.5 million Canadians of Italian descent, which makes it one of the largest Italian migrations in the world. Italian Heritage Month is the perfect time to recognize and showcase the rich culture and heritage of Italian Canadians across the country and in the city of Vaughan, as well as their ongoing contributions to building stronger, vibrant and more inclusive opportunities for all to celebrate together.

Italian Heritage Month Featured Artist

Alessandro Montelli was born in Bari (Italy) August 7th 1991 from his mom italian-canadian, and his dad who both really loved music and italian pop songs so much that they introduced him into studying music theory and classic piano at a very young age. At 15, Alessandro starts writing his first songs with a guitar that his grandma had gifted him and begins singing in school gigs and joining a few rock bands. Every year he performs at local open mic nights and food festivals in his hometown Bitritto, as well as local and national music contests, that slowly give him the opportunity to share his music with a larger audience.

Growing up Alessandro gets really inspired by Italian artists, but since he’s usually travelling to Toronto to visit his mom’s family, he also starts following the Canadian music scene with bands like Simple Plan, Avril Lavigne, Sum41 and Billy Talent, picking up Cds and Vinyls on the spot and bringing them back to Italy. Being able to perform on stage both on guitar and piano gives Alessandro a wider range of connecting with his friends and followers, who truly love the way he makes them feel part of his world.

He also studies vocals at a known music school in Bari, “Il Pentagramma”, and at the Monopoli Conservatory of music (Nino Rota), as well as attending numerous masterclasses and workshops in the music business where he gets to meet some popular vocal coaches and judges in the italian music scene.

In 2013 Alessandro decided to start performing live as a solo artist, joined sometimes by different musicians friends on the drum, bass and electric guitar, showcasing songs written and produced by himself, that talk about everyday life and personal experiences.

On January 27th 2016 he releases his very first single “Strane Parti di Me”, co-produced with OWT studio, a song about finding your true self and happiness: https://bit.ly/32xSnr2 and he gets to perform it all over the Italian peninsula, and in local radios/TV shows like “Antenna Sud”, “Radio Norba”, “Controfestival”, and “Castrocaro Festival” on RAI national TV. Soon after he gets selected to perform in the majestic and historical theatre in Bari, called Teatro Petruzzelli, during the “Premio Mimmo Bucci” an yearly music contest to honour the life of musician Mimmo Bucci, revealing in a sold out night with featured guests the city Mayor, and Vasco Rossi’s guitar player Stef Burns.

In the summer of 2016 he decided to finally move his career to Toronto, the city thatalways inspired his childhood, in search for better opportunities in the international music industry. He wouldn’t know back then how hard it would be to live in Vaughan with his grandparents and to face a much colder weather than the one he was used to in Puglia. Against all odds and challenges, Alessandro really believes in music and what it can do to heal people’s mental health, so he keeps making contacts in the Canadian music scene and volunteering in big music festivals, working hard, busking in the streets and writing songs, this time mostly in English.

In 2019 he starts working with two known producers “Atom” and “Blvxz” with the goal of defining and developing his songs and genre for his Canadian-Italian audience. Needless to say he starts grabbing the attention of people in the industry, and other artists who want to collaborate with him on both EDM and Pop tracks. He gets chosen to perform on the main stage of Yonge & Dundas square, for Youth Day Global, where he will perform one of his latest productions and experience an overwhelming reaction from the crowd.

During the 2020 covid19 pandemic and lockdown, Alessandro doesn’t stop performing online on instagram and FB Lives, uplifting people spirits during the uncertain times, and showcasing his italian heritage in retirement homes, as well as small pop up & social distancing performances downtown Toronto. It’s actually thanks to one of those that he gets to meet Toronto rapper Brent Doctolero known as “Karizma” and together bring to life the song that will represent the change we are all wishing for, “1 Race”. The two this time are writing about equality, justice, and humanity. After they start showcasing the new song everywhere from street corners, to radio stations all over the city, they pick up the attention of some local media like CTV, CP24, and are able to release two music videos. One being a Lyric Video that sees involved friends and artists from Toronto like Ezra Jordan, Mike Ruby, Max Parker, Dani Doucette, Sheena Osman, Sarah Jordan & Matt Von, Crash Adams, Lorraine Lawson, and followers from all over the globe: https://bit.ly/2YKfj5k and an Official Music Video recorded during one of the #blacklivesmatter protests indowntown Toronto: https://bit.ly/2YIs6Fl.

2020 is also the year he will be releasing his new project, an Alternative Pop EP that will include the new single “LIFE”.
